Abstract

Aim The thesis "The linguistic problem of inter-Slavonic 'false friends' in Russian" is concerned with the problem of the so-called 'false friends', or 'deceptive cognates'. Its aim is to show that the treatment of such pairs of words as R. stol 'table' vs. Bg. stol 'chair', R. divan 'sofa' vs. Pol. dywan 'carpet', or R. slovo 'word' vs. Cr. slovo 'letter, character' might be very profitable to linguistics (e.g. semantics or lexicology).
Definition Unfortunately, various authors understand the term 'false friends' in quite different ways, so that this paper uses the term pseudo-analogonymy, which was proposed by Hengst* to refer exclusively to lexico-semantic interference. A detailed definition of this conception is worked out to include all full-words with formal congruency (i.e. similarity or regular correspondence) in two speech forms that do not provide the best equivalent for each other.
Analysis On this basis the semantic and formal causes of the formation of pseudo-analogonymy are analysed as well as the factors influencing the 'dangerousness' and the number of pseudo-analogonyms. It becomes obvious that pseudo-analogonyms are found predominantly in lexical fields with a high percentage of loanwords and between languages with an intermediate abstand (linguistic difference). The 'dangerousness' of pseudo-analogonyms is determined by the relation between the meanings of two words rather than by the character of the meanings themselves.
Special
phenomena
Pseudo-analogonymy occurs even in word fields with clear-cut, 'scientific' word definitions and among words with meanings contrary to each other (enantiosemy). Because of their systematicity pseudo-analogonyms should be analysed not only in pairs but also with respect to their interdependences. As examples of this some verbs of perception (synesthesis) and ethnonyms and place names are examined.
